Frank, this is a strong message. You have a lot of insight. Extremist/fundamentalist and politicized religion is indeed a serious threat. This weekend, I was speaking to a dear friend who is a Black pastor living now in Louisville, KY. He and I were agreeing that white Christian nationalism--or what internationally-respected Christian ethicist David Gushee in his excellent new book titled “Defending Democracy from Its Christian Enemies” calls “authoritarian reactionary Christianity”--are perhaps the greatest threat to a viable, decent, and sane Christian expression in America and the greatest threat to American democracy itself.
I say this as someone who believes in Jesus but who left the Christian Right for some of the same reasons you emphasize here. People need to be allowed to pursue their own religious freedom but not at the expense of others and certainly not seeking to impose their beliefs on others. We need to have separation of church and state, not one controlling the other. And we need a thriving, multicultural and multiracial democracy.
I don’t believe that the extremist, nationalistic, destructive religion you correctly expose and warn about is of a true and loving God.
I appreciate your insights and warnings. You are highlighting dangerous, authoritarian, and ultimately violent theocratic movements that need to be stopped. Thank you.
