RESIST

Petra Costa, Alessandra Orofino, and the Global Refusal to Bow.

If you hear a lot of honking in the background, it is because I am standing inside a No Kings demonstration in my town.

And it makes me think of a podcast I did on In Conversation… with Frank Schaeffer with two incredible guests, Petra Costa and Alessandra Orofino.

They are Brazilian filmmakers behind Apocalypse in the Tropics, a documentary that is absolutely phenomenal. It is currently on Netflix and has been shortlisted for an Oscar. The film tells the story of the far-right takeover in Brazil, fueled by allies of Donald Trump, and how ordinary people stood up and said no.

What you are seeing behind me right now, these demonstrators, these voices saying “No kings here,” is the same spirit you will see in Brazil through Petra and Alessandra’s work.

I want you to watch my conversation with them because it stands for everything we believe in here.

It represents the great hope for our future. People in Brazil are standing up against right-wing authoritarianism, and people here in America are doing the same, in towns like mine and in streets like this one.

So please, watch the conversation.
