I would like to explain why it is inevitable that President Donald Trump is going to conspire to destroy our democracy.
Now, I don’t believe in conspiracy theories most of the time because I realize that most of us are not smart enough to conspire to do anything and carry it out. That’s where all conspiracy theories—nefarious global plots—fall apart. But in this case, there will be a real conspiracy, and Donald Trump is going to try to undermine our democracy. And I’ll tell you why: because he’s an egomaniac.
How are those things connected? Well, you know, I come from an evangelical background. In the 1970s and 80s, along withC. Everett Koop and Ronald Reagan and congressmen and senators and other people who joined the so-called pro-life cause, we tried to undermine democracy for other reasons. And that is because our judicial system was upholding women’s rights, and we wanted to roll that back. We wanted to re-calibrate the balance—not just between church and state and have church dominant—but re-calibrate the balance between the judiciary and elected representatives, and especially the presidency. We wanted an imperial presidency to roll back what we regarded as an imperial Supreme Court that had legalized Roe v. Wade.
And you know, we kind of won—in a terrible, pyrrhic way. Roe has been overturned by Donald Trump’s appointed judges. Donald Trump is a fool. He is a con artist. The only reason he’s in power is because a very evil man by the name of Rupert Murdoch built Fox News Network and deliberately undermined the rule of law. He replaced it with a series of conspiracy theories and lies, training a whole generation of angry Americans—some of whom were disgruntled for legitimate reasons like job losses and globalism, and others for reasons rooted in white or Christian nationalism.
For one reason or another, this coalition was fed a series of conspiracy theories and lies by Rupert Murdoch—lies he knew were false. For instance, today the Wall Street Journal—which he also owns—has turned on Donald Trump and is calling out his lies because they recognize the damage he’s doing to the economy and their friends on Wall Street. So it’s not that no one in those organizations recognizes the truth. But Fox News catered to a certain mentality—an angry, misinformed mentality that had never studied history or read widely. And they won. They created a group of people who could join the Donald Trump cult and follow him wherever he leads.
And that brings us to the present moment. What is that moment, and why will Donald Trump conspire to undermine our democracy? Of which the first taste was what happened when the Capitol was stormed.
Today, he is launching a bunch of policies that are ill-thought-out and are going to have disastrous consequences—from appointing a fool to head up our Defense Department to surrounding himself with sycophants in various departments. Kennedy, who is undermining our system of health care, is an example. Thousands of children will die because they don’t get vaccinated, because fundamentalist home-school parents listen to Kennedy instead of to scientists.
Eventually, most Americans are going to recognize the emperor has no clothes. The emperor being not just Donald Trump, but the whole lying machinery of Fox News—every single sycophant who knows perfectly well they’re spewing falsehoods, just like Tucker Carlson, who privately said he hated Trump but continued to promote him until Murdoch dumped him.
Tucker now has his own show and continues to lie, having cultivated J.D. Vance and helped put him in the White House as vice president. And the circle continues. But in the end, there is such a thing as truth and reality. When the 10,000th child dies of measles, when we have a polio epidemic, when COVID resurfaces and we’ve canceled research into vaccines, when farmers go broke and the government goes broke trying to bail them out to keep Republican votes—then the cracks will appear.
People like Elon Musk will start to distance themselves. He recently gave a speech in Italy in which he endorsed free trade and warned against isolationist economic policies. Cracks will continue to appear, and more and more people will say the emperor has no clothes. Because he doesn’t. Donald Trump is twisting in the wind, stark naked—like Mussolini at the end—because, like the Italians, Americans are going to get sick of their emperor.
This will happen across the board—whether it’s the auto workers in Michigan, people watching deficits balloon, or allies like Canada and Europe wondering what happened to America. Donald Trump has made enemies of our best friends. How will this end well? It won’t. It’s going to end in disaster. Even MAGA voters will begin saying, “The emperor has no clothes. Who will rid us of this prince?”
When the next election comes along, when people like Elon Musk pour millions into campaigns and fail to unseat judges or influence local elections, and when those efforts keep blowing up, people will keep repeating that phrase: “The emperor has no clothes.”
So what will Fox News and Trump do? Having stupid people in power is bad enough. But having people who are smart and pretend to be stupid to get elected or to be on TV—that’s worse. And Donald Trump is a very stupid man. His ideas are truly dumb. His protectionist policies are a disaster. America became wealthy through open markets and generosity. Now, we’re a laughingstock. And it will cost us American lives because people will stop seeing America as a serious power.
So why must Donald Trump conspire to undermine our democracy now? Because he knows the only way to stay out of prison is to stay in power. And because he is arrogant and mentally unwell—he can never admit he was wrong, never say sorry, never back down. He just lies and blames others. He’s going to run out of rope—and that’s when he turns to destroying democracy, because it’s the only thing left.
Just like he did in 2020, when he refused to accept the election results and incited an attack on the Capitol, he will do it again. But this time, it will be broader—even down to local elections. The new Republican policy will be: if Democrats are winning, challenge the system. Fox News will parrot this. Trump will fuel it. Not because they’re dumb, but because they’re too arrogant to admit failure.
So, yes—they will conspire to undermine the American electoral process. That’s what’s coming next. Mark my words. The emperor is not only naked, but he will never admit he even needed clothes. He’ll say the Democrats stole them. Or blame Joe Biden. Or Barack Obama. Or Jewish space lasers.
With Musk’s billions—and his own inability to apologize—there is no limit to the conspiracy theories these people will support to destroy our elections. Fox News is in too deep now. They keep backing Trump even though they know he’s a fraud. Tucker Carlson admitted as much and was fired. But the diehards will keep going.
They’ll parrot Trump’s lies. They’ll help him attack judges and their families. They’ll help him attack journalists. They’ll help dissolve the separation of powers. And most people won’t even care, because no one teaches civics anymore. He’s counting on a miseducated public—including college grads who were taught to look in the wrong direction.
And so, while there’s no conspiracy from Big Pharma to cause autism, while all that is nonsense, this is not. We have a liar in office who can never admit he lied. He tanked the economy. He’s put us in a place where people can’t retire, farmers will lose their land, and the U.S. becomes a global pariah.
Instead of correcting course, he picks fights with our allies—like Canada. And when the next round of local elections comes, Republicans will lose in droves. But rather than accept that, they’ll challenge the results. That will become party policy—undermining judges, threatening the judiciary, pushing for an unconstitutional third term.
And the world will realize: America is not just a rogue state. It’s a state that cannot correct its mistakes. Because the emperor has no clothes, no conscience, and no ability to change. He has an inherently ill personality. And now, Fox News is built in his image.
Rupert Murdoch knows he’s created a monster. The Wall Street Journal is now vocally anti-Trump—not because they’re liberals, but because they live here. Because they’re watching their portfolios collapse. But it’s too late.
Trump cannot avoid the next step. He cannot back down. Ergo, he must conspire to undermine our electoral process.
